London Lightning Shine Bright in Support of Women’s Abuse Prevention
The London Lightning lit up the court and the community on Saturday night with their annual Shine the Light game in support of the London Abused Women’s Centre (LAWC). The night was not only a massive success on the scoreboard, with the Lightning dominating the visiting Rhode Island Kraken 143-103, but also a powerful statement in raising awareness for abused women and girls.
This special event, part of LAWC’s Shine the Light on Woman Abuse campaign, brought together basketball and advocacy, with players donning custom purple jerseys to symbolize the fight against domestic violence. The community showed incredible support, helping to raise over $1,300 through the 50/50 draw and nearly $3,000 from the jersey auction, with all proceeds going directly to LAWC to provide vital services for women in need.
“The Shine the Light campaign is about standing together as a community to support women who have experienced abuse,” said Assistant Coach, Dave Sewell. “The London Lightning are proud to use our platform to bring attention to such an important cause, and we’re incredibly grateful to our fans for their generosity.”
On the court, the Lightning put on a thrilling, high-energy performance, with every player contributing to the scoreboard. From high-flying dunks to dazzling trick plays, the team matched the electric atmosphere in the arena, making for an unforgettable night.
Beyond the final score, the real victory was in the awareness and support generated for LAWC and the women it serves. The London Lightning remain committed to making a difference in the community, both on and off the court.
